I rarely even look at abstract work usually but something in the multitude of colour and loose, airy shapes grabbed my attention at once... I love the use of light and dark- the way the flowers flow upwards, out of the dark red and maroon earth- a somewhat strange choice, as these are not the colours usually associated with growth and life, but making the piece more abstract in its way- and how they reside in the glorious light, while encroached from above and below by darker, more menacing, colours.
Also, I adore the thick brush-strokes, the flecks of white throughout, bringing more light and air to the painting. And finally, the flowers themselves: such simple, wispy outlines, made bolder by the choice of dark colours; they speak to me of hot summer and fading spring, and the moment after the height of life, when everything begins to die away, but is yet still beautiful and enchanting...
